favorite perfumes

had a nice little twitter chat with fellow classmates today. i posed the question “what is your favorite perfume?” i know…not a surprising one for me to ask–but the answers were interesting. gave me a lot of ideas of new ones to try! interestingly enough, out of about 8 respondents, 3 named different versace perfumes! only one other perfume or brand was named more than once–dior was named twice. pretty impressive! some other ones that were named: britney spears midnight fantasy, dior pure poison, lancome maige noire, lavanilla, marc jacobs daisy, & michael kors gold. so many to try out!!

so what about you? what is YOUR favorite perfume?!

songs that smell good, part 4

it’s time for the 4th installment of “lyrics that smell good”! enjoy!!

“my pillow smells like your perfume” – toby keith, “blue bedroom”

this is yet another love lost kind of song. her pillow smells like her perfume, and now that he’s lost her it’s one of the memories he has from her. smell is an important way we remember other people.

“i want your perfume, all around me” – savage garden, “all around me”

there is nothing like being in love. and this song states the many ways he is in love and one of these ways is to smell her perfume all around him. the sense of smell is one that cannot be denied when it comes to love and the powerful affects it has on a person.

“but i know she’s been here lately / i can still smell her perfume” – brooks and dunn, “lost and found”

it’s another love lost kind of song. although this song doesn’t seem to imply that it’s a forever lost. he goes on a search to find the love he has lost and knows where she has been because her perfume lingers in those places.

hope you enjoyed these songs today. share your songs that are perfume/cologne/smell related and share what you think about these songs in the comments!

fragrance trends of 2012

 “peruvian pink pepper berries”

there are certainly some perfumes that never go out of style *cough chanel no. 5 cough* while others seem to come and go with the changing wind. ¹ so what if you are looking for the next best thing for this year and want to know what the hottest scents are so you can stay in style, smell trendy, and stay on top of the all things beauty and fashion? search no more! bell flavors and fragrances have come to your (and my!) rescue. it looks like for the fragrance world in 2012, the theme is “the wild luxury consumer”. ²  though the world may be tightening their belts when it comes to necessities, it seems as though luxury consumers will spare no expense when it comes to seeking out more couture items, possibly more than ever before. so for all you lovelies out there wanting to know how to smell in style this year “you should note that there seems to be a shift towards more exotic and striking scents, as opposed to the softer, floral and woody scents of recent times.” ¹

bell flavors and fragrances’ marketing teams did much research in the arenas of both flavors and fragrances to gather this data. they used “product launches, industry regulations, world event, and unique new preference for the indulgent consumer” in order to present their findings and reveal what trends may be up-and-coming for the year. ² their picks for 2012 are as follows:

1. ginger orchid
2. orange flower
3. tart guava
4. gold amber
5. green pear
6. spicy bergamot
7. root beer
8. pink pepper
9. leather
10. tomato leaf ²

of course none of these fragrances are new finds; they have been used before. ¹ leather is particularly popular in men’s scents, which is not new, as burberry’s london for men uses it in its notes. ¹ and one that i personally am growing to love, pink pepper, “is fast becoming a hot trend and a common favourite in current and upcoming perfumes. derived from the peruvian pepper tree, the note has quickly spiced up rumours of becoming one of the lead scents in 2012 for consumers, manufacturers and perfume sellers alike. according to experts, pink pepper is reflective of the ‘mood of our times’ (as claimed on and is a spicy and refreshing scent that is perfect to kick off 2012. this warm and spicy scent can be found in perfumes such as armani acqua di gioia and gucci’s guilty intense”. ¹

and of course, we cannot ignore the ever popular new celebrity scents that are constantly flooding our department stores and perfume shops. celebs such as madonna (truth or dare) and lady gaga (monster) have come out with their scents this year. and of course justin bieber is still going strong with “someday.” ¹ It has been rumored that both nicole ritchie and kanye west might also be working on signature fragrances of their own in the near future. ¹

so now that you are armed and ready, you can spend those hard earned dollars wisely and choose something that will keep you stylish. but don’t forget: your fragrance is your own. choose something that says YOU and screams confidence!

songs that smell good, part 3

here i am with the third installment of songs that smell good. i hope you enjoy reading these as much as i enjoy posting them!

“the way you smell so sweet, you know you could have been some perfume” -the temptations, “the way you do the things you do”

this whole song is absolutely adorable. providing details as to why he loves his woman so much, the singer expresses the way she smells and says she “could have been some perfume.” as human beings, smell is so important. the way someone smells is part of attracting another person.

“the night jasmine bloom of your hollywood perfume” -the pretenders, “hollywood perfume”

this is another example of the sense of smell serving as a reminder of a love lost.

“ooh ooh ooh ms. grace / satin and perfume and lace / the minute i saw your face / i knew that i loved you” -tymes, “ms. grace”

the singer comments on feminine qualities that he instantly notices and falls in love with. he sees her and smells her and knows how he feels about her. very romantic.

feel free to share any songs you know of that have to do with fragrances! there are so many out there.

smelling the new frontier

whilst doing some reading for a special events class i am taking, i stumbled across a gem of a topic and i thought i would share it with you lovely folks. author dr. joe goldblatt introduces his readers to bob estrin, who has been creating technical innovations for over 30 years, in his book special events: a new generation and the next frontier, 6th ed.

estrin says, “when you first interviewed me for your book, i predicted that smell would become one of the most important and dominant of all the senses in event production. now, through the new envirodine studios ( enviroscents fragrance system, we are able to make this prediction a reality (pg. 295). smells like grandma’s kitchen, christmas morning, and a barbecue are created and bring back memories for guests that help set the mood of the event. goldblatt says, “[estrin] has used this new system to overcome negative smells in event facilities and also to stimulate the imagination of his guests through sense memory. according to estrin, ‘you only have to fool a couple of the senses to develop the illusion of reality, and smell is one of the most powerful ways to do this effectively.'”

this is exciting! technology is advancing and we can even control the smells around us in a completely new way. have you had any experiences involving smells at an event? how did it affect your mood? did you notice it or was it seamlessly integrated? what are your thoughts about this advancing technology or where would you like to see it go? share, share, share!

new chanel perfume: coco noir

it’s almost here! in 2 days the new chanel perfume, coco noir, debuts! according to the chanel website the “striking top notes of grapefruit and bergamot accentuate the floral accord, with rose and jasmine, while indonesian patchouli and sandalwood notes add warmth.”

it seems to be a rising trend for black perfume bottles now, i.e. lady gaga’s new fragrance, fame.

such excitement! will you be trying it out? what are your thoughts on the new black bottle packaging? would love to hear your thoughts!
